According to Savills, a UK-based real estate agency, Barbados is the most popular Caribbean destination for executive digital nomads.

Savills’ director, Paul Tostevin, wrote in his April 27 blog that an Executive Nomad Rating poll was undertaken as part of the company’s Impacts 2022 programme.

Barbados was ranked first in the Caribbean and fifth overall out of 15 destinations. This was based on the country having the fastest internet in the region, a pleasant climate, and decent air connectivity. Lisbon was the most popular destination, followed by Miami, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and the Algarve, Portugal.

The index was created using nations with a digital nomad visa programme or are members of an economic bloc that enables free movement. Other criteria also considered in the digital nomads poll included:

  • A year-round pleasant environment
  • Excellent quality of life
  • An established luxury housing market

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced the Welcome Stamp Program in July 2020. The objective was to expand the island’s tourism sector and attract a new type of visitor. In addition, the Remote Employment Amendment Bill, passed in July 2021, aims to fill the vacuum left by decreased tourist visits and earn foreign cash.

It permitted the existing legislation governing the Welcome Stamp Program to be extended. The Remote Employment Act 2020-2023 allows programme participants to renew their applications and pay the necessary fees to stay in Barbados for another year.

Barbados received 3,511 applications and approved 2,308 for the programme as of March 2022. There were 2,156 applications for July to December 2020, 1,011 applications for the year 2021, and 254 applications until the end of March this year.
